I think i would like to learn more about tutoring children with a learning disability. All types of children need help whether there's a disability or not. Tutoring children is hard enough but helping a child who has a disability is a challenge that would be greatly rewarding for not only the student but the tutor s well. So that is something i would find interesting to learn about

During my session with Angela, I asked her to read her paper to me out loud by doing this she was able to catch some of her just by hearing her own voice. I asked her questions on what she wanted to get across and what she was focoused on and she really seemed to connect better with her writing . I felt like in a situation like this min. tutoring was an excellent way to go because the student seems to pick up on their own mistakes and soon they won't need anyone else to help them. Angela helped me as well doing the best she could without me draft i quickly told her what my essay was about and how i organized it. I told her I was having a little trouble with the ending and with a few questions she got me to see what I was doing wrong and what I needed to do to fix my problem. This way is good because the student feels like they can do it on their own rather than always depending on help from someone else.

Minimalist Tutoring
Minimalist tutoring doesn't have a specific group on who it would be good for and who it wouldn't be good for. I feel this type of approach is more of a how comfortable the student feels with the subject, paper, tutor kind of approach. What I mean by this is, if the student seems to be comfortable and confident with their paper I think this approach would be more than fine for them. I feel Minimalist tutoring is the last phase of tutoring if you're at this point its almost like you don't even need a tutor or a writing center at all. So as far as who this would work best with is very situational and individually based. Minimalist tutoring is not my favorite type of tutoring but if the situation fits I'll be sure to use it..

Tutoring Check List

Become acquainted with the student

Pay attention to the students body language

Connect to the students interest

Reassure the students strong points

Help them break down the paper in to smaller pieces

Answer any and all questions

Make sure the student walks out understanding

How to make it work
  • Greet the student ask why they're here and what they want to accomplish
  • A student who is sitting up and ready to go is more likely to obtain something from the session than a student who is slouched over and doesn't care
  • Connecting to an interest of the student makes the subject easier to obtain
  • Reassuring the students strong points is encouraging and will help the student feel like they can do it
  • Breaking the assignment down into smaller pieces helps the student to feel not so overwhelmed
  • Make sure you answer all and any questions so your student leaves their session as clear as possible
  • Ask questions to make sure they're clear and understanding

From my experiences in class I feel the most important methods for effective tutoring is anything that will get the student involved and understanding what they need to do or the corrections they need to make. For example the bumper sticker idea it really got me thinking and helped me form more complete idea and gave me more of a direction in where i was going. All from a silly little bumper sticker. Or the highlighting in two different colors.. One color pointing out my good idea ans one color cutting something i may not need or that might be throwing my paper off. Little ideas like this i found most helpful when i was tutoring and being tutored. The methods I'd use really would have to depend on the student and what he/ she was there for if she/he need focus i think i would do the bumper sticker or something like it. If it was more of a my paper doesn't sound right or make sense paper i would do the color coding where I'd give the student two different colors and highlight the stuff that makes the paper strong in one color and the stuff that may make the paper weak in another color. Both ways keeps the student involved and the tutor does not feel like they are giving the student the answers. My biggest problem that I need to work on during a tutoring session would have to be talking so much its very important for the student to hold most of the conversation during the tutoring session therefore I need to learn on how to get the student to talk more and make my questions more vague so they can ask more questions and maybe obtain there own answer with just a LITTLE but of guidance from me.

My writing philosophy would have to be the Burkean Parlor Model. I feel if a student learns more by obtaining their knowledge in their own way. And what I got from the Burkean Parlor Model is that you listen for a little bit and when you feel you obtained what you needed to gain you move on and put it in your own words. By doing this i feel what you learned will stick with you better than just reading words and memorizing them never truley understanding what you are really leaning. I feel we use methods like this everyday not only in writing centers and what i've learned from my own experince is, whatever works for you... you should go with. For a student like my self this would be the perfect model for me. But maybe for someone else something more cut and paste would work better for them.
